Joycelyn Ko stretches her staggering run to storm into quarter-final of Canada Open Grand Prix 2012
Joycelyn Ko, Canada’s talented young shuttler, continued cheering her home fans as she reached into Women’s Singles quarter-final after putting up a stunning performance against her higher ranked rival Michelle Chan Ky of New Zealand in round-of-16 match
at the Canada Open Grand Prix 2012 on Thursday, July 12, in Canada.
The un-seeded Joycelyn, who has been impressive in all of her matches, continued her staggering run as she thrashed the fourth seeded Michelle in an epic battle by taking 59 minutes of court time.
The lower ranked Joycelyn lost the opening set but fought back to grab the second game. She continued her positive performance and secured the final game to stamp her mark over Michelle in rubber games with a decent margin.
The fourth seeded Michelle, on the other hand, was the favourite to win this battle but she was shocked with the severe treatment of her lower ranked opponent and eventually bowed down to her in three sets with a reasonable score.
In the first set, Michelle was the leader of the game as she played dominating badminton in opening half and took an 11-9 lead on the board until the one-minute break.
After the interval, Joycelyn showed her class by playing in a spirited manner and created pressure on her rival by making the score levelled.
The Canadian lady was impressive in her speed and game plan but she failed to live up to expectations in the ending points and lost the set with a tight score of 19-21.
In the second game, Joycelyn did not let her Kiwi challenger to set up lead as she played with superb control this time and took an 11-7 advantage until the break.
After the interval, the Canadian lady continued her roller-coaster performance on court and maintained her focus all the way to grab the set with a 21-16 score on the board.
In the deciding game, Michelle performed well by taking control of rallies and managed an 11-6 lead until the end of first half.
The Kiwi shuttler was ahead at 16-11 when Joycelyn surprised everyone by playing flawless badminton and remained successful in snatching the final game with a 21-18 score on the board.
Joycelyn ended up the match in rubber games against her higher ranked challenger with a thrilling margin of 19-21, 21-16 and 21-18.
