Jrue Holiday inspires Philadelphia 76ers to a 104-97 win over the Detroit Pistons: NBA Recap
Jrue Holiday carried the Philadelphia 76ers to a 104-97 win over the Detroit Pistons here at Wells Fargo Center Monday night.
Holiday scored 25 points handed out 8 assists and grabbed 5 rebounds, Thaddeus Young collected 20 points while Evan Turner posted a double-double with 18 points 11 rebounds and 7 assists.
Greg Monroe led the Pistons with 22 points and 7 rebounds, Brandon Knight scored 22 points while Rodney Stuckey came off the bench to add 19 points for Detroit, who shot 39.5 percent from the floor.
"I'm just trying to get myself going early. I'm trying to be active at both ends,"
Hawes, on picking up 15 points, eight rebounds and blocking three shots for the Phillies.
The Sixers had struggled in the rebounding department early on in the season but have picked up their game on the glass recently. On the night, they out-rebounded the Pistons 45-40, the third straight game the 76ers have grabbed
more rebounds than their opponents.
The intensity of the game can be judged from the fact that the score was tied 12 times and the lead switched hands 13 times. Philadelphia got off to a good start and a Holiday bank shot had them up 7-2. An Evan Turner layup had
the Sixers up by 12-6 and they maintained their lead for a while before the Pistons came back to tie the score on 18. A 7-0 spurt had the 76ers up 25-19; Rodney Stuckey made a buzzer beating layup to cut the deficit down by two.
Three Corey Maggette free throws early in the second period had the Pistons to within 26-27 of the Sixers. Spencer Hawes made a layup to put Phillies up 33-28 but Stuckey negated it with a deuce at the other side of the court to
make it a one point game on 32-33. It was still a close game on 40-39, the Pistons went ahead late in the period and a rookie Singler shot from behind the arc had them up 49-43. Wayns made a three point play to reduce the deficit down to 46-49 by halftime.
Philadelphia got off to a dream start in the second half as a 14-0 run put them ahead on 60-49. The Pistons matched eye for eye as they scored 8 straight points to reduce the deficit down to 57-60. It was close for the rest of
the period and a Brandon Knight three pointer for the Pistons tied the score on 71. Later on, a Hawes jumper at the buzzer had the Phillies leading 76-75 as they headed into the final period.
Charlie Villanueva connected from downtown to tie the score on 91 with 5:26 on the regulation. The Sixers started to pull ahead late in the quarter and a Holiday jumper had the Phillies up 98-93, they defended well in the last
few minutes for a 104-97 win.
