Does anyone know what they used to obtain that scream sound when the plane dove? And if so are they available to purchase? Or can I make one myself? I have always wondered but It's hard to find info about that part.

  1. Install a loudspeaker on your plane and play that screaming sound when you dive. That is the cheapest and simplest solution.

  2. The Stuka had a siren mounted on the landing gear strut. I seriously doubt they are available.

  3. I remember reading, somewhere, that the dive brakes had holes in them that produced the whistling scream.

  4. The Stuka pilots called them "Jericho Trumpets."  They were used only in the early months of the war, when the psychological impact was important, and they were later removed.

It is just a length of tapered tubing with a slit covering most of the small end; it is more like a duck call than anything else.  If you were skillful at sheet metal work, you could make one, or something very similar to it, but what would be the point?

It would be illegal to use it on a car or an airplane, and it would just add weight and drag if you attached one to an airplane, even if you could find a legal way of attaching it.

So just listen to the recording a few times, and you will get over it.  Have fun!

  5. The Early Ju-87 Dive bombers had Sirens (wind powered, you can see the tiny propellers in pictures) used to terrorize the civilians, troops etc. they bombed (it was very effective as a "terror" weapon at that stage of WW2) However, later marks had the "spats" as well as the siren's deleted. By then the Skuka was a known entity and did not "scare" anyone. It became an effective Tank buster (large Cannons slung below the wings) and had many tank kills on the Eastern front. You could make one with a small siren, attach  a method to make it work  (speak to an electrician to have one made, should not be to expensive). Remember the original was a wind driven siren, active only in a Very steep (70 deg) dive!!

  6. A siren was mounted on Stuka dive bombers to add to the terror factor.
