Juan Alejandr Garcia wins third stage and Oscar Sevilla takes overall lead at 2011 Vuelta a Colombia
GW Shimano-Chec-Edeq-Envia team’s Juan Alejandr Garcia won the third stage of 2011 Vuelta a Colombia on Wednesday, June 15. Oscar Sevilla took overall leader’s yellow jersey.
The race started in Yumbo and ended in Caicedonia. Juan took a total of 3 hours, 26 minutes and 11 seconds to cover a distance of 147 kilometres.
The race leader, Oscar Sevilla of Gobernacion De Antioquia-Indeportes Antioquia, was the runner-up with 28 seconds behind Juan.
Felix Rafael Cardenas of GW Shimano-Chec-Edeq-Envia was in good form and he grabbed third spot.
Felix told the media, "I had packed. It was not my idea to dress as a leader, but he touched me. Was necessary to avoid discounting Cardenas. He was not looking shirt, but I was given for reasons of race."
Edgar Alonso Fonseca was unable to overtake the group of 25 riders and grabbed the 26th spot with a difference of 35 seconds.
With 103.9 kilometres to go, Edgar Alonso won the first Mountain, ahead of Luis Pena and Miguel Nino. In the second climb, Miguel maintained his speed and gained 15 points, ahead of Edgar Alonso.
In the final 13 kilometres, the Colombian rider, Juan Alejandr, and Miguel worked together to gain an advantage of few seconds, but Juan took the final KOM of the day.
A group of four riders made their first breakaway, which included, Jefferson Vargas, Remberto Jaramillo, Alejandr Garcia and Jorge Humberto Martinez.
Juan tried his best to maintain his pace, but he failed and with the help of his team-mate, Vargas, won all the three sprints.
Oscar Sevilla won the overall standing with a timing of 11 hours, 34 minutes and 21 seconds. Julian Rodas was the runner-up with 4 seconds behind Oscar. Sergio Luis Henao finished third with a difference of 30 seconds.
Oscar said, "I had to pack to win the stage but I could not stay ahead of Garcia. From now on I will do everything possible to hold the yellow jersey.”
The next stage will start in Caicedonia and end in Ibague. All the riders will cover a distance of 117 kilometres.
