Juan Antonio Flecha to leave Team Sky after the end of 2012 season
Juan Antonio Flecha of Team Sky has never been a prominent performer throughout his thirteen-year professional career but the cyclist does have quite a few significant victories in his bag.
The 34-year-old marked his professional debut with Team Relax-Fuenlabrada in 2000 and spent a period of two years with the team.
He also represented Team iBanesto.com (2002-03), Team Fassa Bortolo (2004-05), Team Rabobank (2006-2009) and penned a three-year deal with Team Sky in 2010.
The Spaniard helped the team with several victories in the past three years including two stages at the Tour de France 2010 and 2011.
It is believed that the Flecha might end up with Team Liquigas-Cannondale or Team Movistar for the coming seasons.
A renowned British newspaper, De Telegraaf reported that the cyclist’s Manager Alex Carrera is in argument with several teams.
"Team Sky, Liquigas-Cannondale and Movistar have shown interest. At Sky he will, however, work for Edvald Boasson Hagen and Geraint Thomas, while Liquigas has Peter Sagan”.
“With Vacansoleil he would take a leadership role. This speaks to him," said Carrera.
Flecha was interested to represent Team Sky at the Tour de France but could not make it through the final team’s squad.
"I’d also really love to do the Tour de France again this year,” he briefed earlier. “It would be my tenth Tour in a row. That would make me very proud and I would really think ‘wow, look at that, that’s fantastic”.
“I know that I would be going there to work for Mark [Cavendish] and Bradley [Wiggins] and that will keep me occupied”.
The 34-year-struggled during the first half of the 2012 season and has not registered any victories yet. His only two commendable performances include a third place finish at the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and a fourth overall spot at the Paris-Roubaix 2012.
The final decision has not yet been made by the cyclist nor is there any news from the British team.
It will be interesting to see, if Flecha succeeds in finding a new home with a World Tour team to continue his professional pursuit for the coming seasons.
