Juan Carlos Ferrero edges past Alex Bogomolov in 2nd round match – Valencia Open 2011
Juan Carlos Ferrero, Spanish world No.58, and the former world No.1, outplayed Alex Bogomolov, Russian world No.33, in the second round match of Valencia Open 2011 defeating him 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-2 in a long almost three hour hard
indoor circuit match at Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències, Valencia, Spain on Thursday, 4th of November.
Bogomolov, opening the match, served the first game, however, was jolted early as the Spaniard broke the American on his first serve and followed with a service winner to lead the first set with two games to zero. The higher ranked
American finally rolled down his side of the scoreboard, 2-1, winning game three and switched back the serve.
Ferrero continued to dominate, bagging games of his serve and maintaining his lead, 3-1. Cutting down the lead, 2-3, Bogomolov took out game five, however, was unable to break back early. With the scoreboard rolling down at 4-2,
Ferrero served next and broke the higher ranked rival to lead the set, 5-2.
However, the 28-year-old did not give up; breaking back right away, game eight, serving out game nine, and breaking again in game ten led the American even up the scores at 5-5. With surprising comeback, the American was not back
in the fight, and followed on to serve next.
Ferrero did breaking again, third time in the set, however, was followed by the American equalling the impact and broke back. The set eventually went into a tiebreaker set with the world No.33 to serve first. Losing down his momentum
in the middle of the set, Ferrero did pull back as he rushed away winning the tiebreaker, 7-3, and the set 7-6(3) to lead the match 1-0.
Moving on with set two, the two broke each other in the first two games and levelled up at 1-1. Boiling up the fixture, Bogomolov struck back as he broke the Spaniard for the second time and followed with a service win to lead
the second set, 4-2.
Maintain his two games lead, the 28-year-old pulled back in the match as he fired up a final down the line winner in game ten to win the set, 6-4, and equal the match scores to 1-1.
Firing up with the decider, Ferrero took charge as he served out the first game of the set, 1-0, and followed with breaking the higher ranked American to pocket the first two games, 2-0. The former world No.1 went on fire as he
served and broke again and was now up 4-nil on the American in the decider.
Pulling off his fifth consecutive win in the decider set, Ferrero was now just one more strike away from his win. Bogomolov, on the other hand, did not lose hope as he served out game six and broke the Spaniard in seventh, 5-2.
However, this time the Spaniard did not let me come back up.
Breaking the world No.33 for the third time in the decider, Ferrero finished off winning the set 6-2, and the match with a tough battle.
Through to the quarter-final stage, the veteran will now play against Argentine rival, Juan Monaco, as the two collide on Friday, 5th November to decide the semi-finalist.
