Juan Carlos Ferrero slays Jonathan Dasnieres De Veigy in round one – Roland Garros 2012
Former world number one, Juan Carlos Ferrero, crushed the local wildcard entrant, Jonathan Dasnieres De Veigy, with a breadstick at the French Open 2012 on Sunday. He penned down a 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 victory against the world number 158 to cruise into the second round at this second of the four Grand Slam event taking place in Paris, France.
The 2003 titlist, Ferrero lost his serve twice but cashed in seven out of 21 break opportunities to get the better of the wildcard. As a result, Carlos Ferrero not only edged in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against the left-handed French but also booked a place in the round of 64.
"When I walk on the court I don't think whether I am young or old, the only thing I try to do is play well," the jubilant Spaniard was quoted in a post-match press conference.
Carlos Ferrero made a dismal entry at this prestigious clay court tournament and suffered the first blow in the opening game to trail at 0-1. However, he made a stunning reply and reeled off the following six games in a row, eventually pulling out the opener with a breadstick.
The 32-year-old lost his track towards the follow-up set and after flinging away his opening serve, he went 0-3 down. However, Ferrero went on a five-game tear after that and got the upper hand. The Spaniard plucked his serve once more and sealed the set by winning six games to four.
Ranked 41st in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Carlos Ferrero was at his peak in the third set. He earned the coveted break in the opening game and jumped to a 2-0 lead. The Spaniard held his remaining serve with poise and cashed in another break chance to pocket the final set with a 6-3 score line.
The Spaniard spilled 33 unforced errors but impressively clicked 28 out of 36 points on his first serve share to dominate.
Next in queue for Carlos Ferrero is the 21st seed, Marin Cilic from Croatia. The seeded Croat tumbled over the Spanish qualifier, Daniel Munoz De La Nava, in straight sets to set up this meeting.
