Juan Carlos Ferrero stuns Fernando Verdasco in second round – Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011
Former world No.1 Spaniard, Juan Carlos Ferrero, mastered over his compatriot, Fernando Verdasco today, 12th October, in the 2nd round melee of Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011. Contesting at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, Shanghai, China Ferrero prove much more reliable in long rallies resulting in a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over his compatriot in long two hours and six minutes match.
With the two compatriots making their way into the blue hard court, the stands were one way or the other supporting the same side, the Spaniards. Anyhow, winning the toss, Verdasco took the first serve of the match and rolled down the scoreboard, 1-0.
Breaking early, Verdasco dispensed game 2 in his favour, however, could not hold on to his serve next and broke down, 2-1. Serving out game 4, the former world No.1, Ferrero levelled up the scores at 2-2 and stood to return again.
Commanding the set, Verdasco went on clearing up another game to lead the set 3-2. However, the higher ranked Spaniard was still unable to break and take lead. With scores now at 4-4, Verdasco served out game 9 and broke the world No.69 after the two deuced three times and pocketed the set, 6-4.
Leading the game, Verdasco served first again and dropped short first, losing a breakpoint, however, broke back in game 2 to level up the scores, 1-1. The 27-year-old then served out game 3 followed by the former world No.1 levelling up instantly, 2-2.
Break-n-serving next, the higher ranked Spaniard next, Ferrero juggled his way into the lead, 4-2, surprising the world No.24. Verdasco did cut the lead back, however, could not break back, 4-3. Building up his momentum the flared up former world No.1 served-n-broke again, 6-3, and levelled up the match scores.
Frustrated on his unforced error percentage, Verdasco smashed his racket as he lost the 2nd set. Anyhow, Ferrero now had the upper hand in the match as he served out the first game of the decider with a double game point win, 1-0.
Rallying out strong, the two equalled up next at 2-2 before Ferrero outplayed the world No.24 with a breakpoint. With a fantastic Serve-break-serve tactic, the former world No.1 outraged his compatriot bringing him down from a mere game win to an eventual loss.
With just one more game to pack it up, Ferrero topped up his winning cake with a cherry. Breaking Verdasco in the final game of the match, the 31-year-old mustered away winning the set 6-2, and the match with a super comeback.
Through to the 3rd round, Ferrero will now face the winner of the match between compatriot, David Ferrer, or the Canadian young gun, Milos Raonic for the quarter-final battle.
