Juan Carlos Ferrero takes down Thomaz Bellucci in first round – China Open 2011
Another surprising outcome in the opening round of the China Open, as the world number 36, Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil crashed out of the tournament at the hands of the 84th ranked Spaniard, Juan Carlos Ferrero, on Tuesday
afternoon.
Unseeded in the tournament, the former world number one took one hour and twenty four minutes of play to wrap up the straight sets victory at 6-1, 7-6(4), to dispose of the Brazilian contestant. Ferrero depicted his vintage class
to outplay Bellucci in a convincing manner and booked himself a place in the second round of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 event.
The contest appeared completely one-sided in the opener but Bellucci gathered up some pace in the next set to pose some resistance to the fury of the Spaniard. He dragged the second set into a tie breaker round but lost his steam
in the decider to fall out of the competition in the very first round.
Ferrero finally avenged his defeat from the Brazilian, who outplayed him in a quarter-final clash at Costa Do Sauipe in 2009. The Spanish competitor registered 14th victory of the running ATP season on Tuesday and levelled
his record 1-1 against Bellucci in singles matchups.
The belligerent Spaniard served exceptionally well throughout the contest without dropping a single point and secured 34 out of 34 first serve points to come out as the winner. Bellucci followed him with 29 points but the Brazilian
utterly failed to register a single serve break in the entire matchup, frittering away four critical chances to finish on the losing side in the end.
Bellucci was absolutely blown away by the belligerence of Ferrero in the opening set, suffering two crushing serve breaks to lose the opener at 1-6. The Brazilian held his serve throughout the second set to impose a tie breaker
round at 6-6 but some errant strokes from his racquet provided ample opportunities to Ferrero to conclude victory at &-6(4).
Ferrero will go one-on-one against his fellow compatriot, Marcel Granollers, in the round of sixteen to book a place in the quarter-final draw of the China Open. Granollers made a huge upset in his opening match, as he defeated
the fifth seeded Frenchman, Gilles Simon, in straight sets 6-3, 6-1, to feature the all-Spanish affair in the second round of the tournament.
