Juan Carlos Ferrero vs Mikhail Youzhny – Second Round Preview: Mercedes Cup 2011
The 2nd round of the Mercedes Cup 2011 continues today as the world’s top tennis players collide to win their seat in the 3rd round of the tour. Following his win in the 1st round, gives the Spaniard
Juan Carlos Ferrero a chance to extend his 2-1 head to head record against the mighty Russian Mikhail Youzhny. Juan is currently ranked at World No. 85 while the magnificent Russian, Youzhny, is at world No. 17. The match will be played at the TC Weissenhof
Court, Stuttgart, Germany.
The 31 year old Spanish sensation ruled the rankings in 2003 as he was the world’s No.1 seed. He has won a total of 15 titles in his career.  Despite, that the Spaniard has lost his form in recent years. Although his records against
his upcoming rival in the Mercedes Cup give an advantage to the former world No.1, he has yet to give a better show to beat the Russian whiz.
However, the Russian bulldog is improving with each match he plays. The right handed former world No.8, Mikhail, is the 3rd seed in the tournament. The 29-year-old is, apparently, in improved form than the Spaniard,
though statistically the two players cannot be differentiated much.
Historically, Youzhny has won the one match against Ferrero on clay court. The other two matches that the Spaniard won were on grass and hard courts. Even though Ferrero is much more experienced, the fact of the matter is that
the Russian is way up the ranking just because he has been performing at his best. This might prove to be the competitive edge to his win over Ferrero.
Another reason for Ferrero’s unusual performance is that he has been running his tennis school “Equelite-Juan Carlos Ferrero” since 2001. He has also won the highest sporting award from the king Juan Carlos on September 30, 2004.Apparently
the Spaniard has nothing to lose as he has had his priceless moments long ago.
Although the second round might not have much of an importance for the former World No.1, this will help him step up in the rankings. But for that to happen, the Spaniard needs to break the Russian wall in the 2nd round
of the Mercedes cup 2011. Surely this is going to be a match worth a watch as the Russian will give his sweat and blood to defeat the old Spaniard.
