Juan Carlos Oviedo will be in Miami Marlins’ bullpen soon - MLB Update
As per initial reports, relief pitcher Juan Carlos Oviedo will be back after being enlisted in restricted players list last September. On being known for having feigned identity with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he was banned.
As soon as he gets a Visa in the Dominican Republic from the U.S consulate, he will head to the Marlins.
If statement of the Miami Marlins’ president David Samson is anything to go by, Oviedo will be in the bullpen soon. The fact he is one of those relief pitchers with highest number of saves for the Marlins, his inclusion will boost the weakened bullpen immensely.
“When he reports, after that, there will be a period of time that he will not be with us,” Samson stated. “We’re not really counting on him for quite a while. The way it’s supposed to work — he’s supposed to get a visa, call us to say he has a visa. We make
a flight to get him to Florida so he can report and start doing stuff with him, and wait to hear what’s next. We haven’t even got to the first part yet, but I did just read about him getting on.”
Relief pitcher Heath Bell is one of the few reliable closers for the Marlins. While he can throw four to five games in a row, overuse of him more often results in a poor performance.
It is because of the same reason, the Marlins’ manager Ozzie Guillen took him off the season earlier. Idea was to give him rest, so that once he returns, he will be throwing at his best.
Seen in this context, Oviedo’s entry will alleviate burden on Bell. Together they can form a formidable front late in the innings for opponents. This will help the Marlins’ win games, which they are more likely to lose if closers are ordinary.
One will assume, damage due to injuries to their hitters, Emilio Bonifacio and Austin Kearns, will be offset with a strengthened bullpen now.
Oviedo will like to resume his journey with the Marlins right from where he had left and keep bringing saves during decisive moments of the game.
Since the Marlins seriously need a quality closer, by putting up stand-out performances, he can steal the spotlight.
