Juan Carlos Sanchez Junior defies all odds and defends title against Juan Alberto Rosas – Boxing News
Juan Carlos Sanchez Junior, the current IBF super flyweight champion, defended his title successfully for the very first time and grabbed an impressive unanimous decision over Juan Alberto Rosas, the former IBF super flyweight champion, in a 12-round bout
held on May 19, 2012.
The duo headlined the Saturday night showdown which was organised and promoted by Fernando Beltran of Promociones Zanfer and the ring for the event was set up at Arena TKT Box Tour in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico.
The night was co-headlined by the non-title eight-round bout between Sergio Torres and Guillermo Arroyo and the show was televised live on Mexico’s state television channel Azteca.
Juan Junior, 21, was seriously outclassed by his opponent’s hefty resume and to some extent had the odds substantially against him. The Mexican lad was entering in his career’s 16th bout and boasted 13 wins.
Also known as ‘The Zurdito’, Juan has lost just one bout in his career to Daniel Rosas and since then was on a six-bout win streak. Carlos Junior was entering in his first IBF super flyweight title defence bout, the title which he grabbed from Rodrigo Guerrero
in his last bout.
His opponent, Alberto, 27, boasted a huge resume with an intimidating win and knockout ratio. Rosas was entering in his career’s 43rd win and emerged victorious in 36. Also known as ‘The Monster’ or ‘El Topo’, Rosas has nailed 27 of his opponents by knockout
and has lost just six bouts.
A bird’s eye view of the resume of both men showed that Alberto will easily nail the young title holder in fact will annihilate Juan in the very initial rounds of the bout. In addition, Alberto was on a four-bout win streak and boasted several title wins
in his career.
Despite having all the odds and technical facets against him, the young Juan did not get intimidated and started the bout in a confident and commanding manner. It was this reason why Juan got successful in flattening Alberto to the ring floor in the very
first round of the bout.
But this whole scenario changed and Alberto, on understanding that Juan has talent, adopted a defensive stance and started throwing well targeted jabs. Alberto literally gave a tough time to the young lad during the 12-round showdown but Juan outwitted his
every manoeuvre and eventually convinced the judges.
All the three designated judges allocated 118-109, 118-109 and 120-107 to Carlos officially announcing the fact that the young lad has retained his title. After the huge, impressive and career boosting win, Carlos Junior just stated, “I made every effort
to connect with my punches, but Sanchez was very elusive.”
The win has helped Juan start a new era of his career and with this victory he has not only defended his very first career title but has also grabbed a huge win over a heavily experienced veteran.
