Juan Castillo on Andy Reid: I'd take a bullet for Coach – NFL News
Even though Juan Castillo’s 18 years of service to Philadelphia Eagles were abruptly ended when head coach Andy Reid decided to fire him, Castillo still has respect and loyalty for Reid.
Reid made Castillo Eagles defensive coordinator when he was serving as offensive line coach. Unfortunately, Castillo could not succeed in the new role and the team stayed below par in the 2011 season and has not performed well in this season either.
Eagles’ recent performance has also raised some questions on the job security of Reid and many experts believe that the owner will not retain him if Eagles finish another season disappointingly.
Reid has categorically denied that his decision to fire Castillo had something to do with the looming threats on his job.
Whatever the case is, Castillo still has respect and love for Reid. After being fired, Castillo told Comcast SportsNet, via ESPN:
“I said it before, I'd take a bullet for Coach. Coach gave me the opportunity of a lifetime, man. And I didn't get it done. And that's hard.”
He added:
"Last year, Coach hired me to do a job. The job was to help him win a championship. And I didn't get that accomplished. I know the guys are looking out there. We always talk about being a warrior. A warrior means that you get the job done no matter what.”
Reid has also said that it was not an easy decision for him to fire Castillo, who is now seeking some other options to get his career as a coach going.
Eagles are 3-3 after six games, but the record could have been much better. Eagles gave away a strong lead in their last two games to eventually lose them.
The defence could not perform well in the last two games and the defeats were certainly tormenting for everyone. Castillo paid the price for his failings and he knows he did not do well. He said:
“The hard part for me was that I let down Coach Reid, I let down the organization and I let down the city.”
Eagles have promoted Todd Bowles, who will not take care of the team’s defence.
