Juan Diaz quits boxing temporarily to attend Law school – Boxing news
Mexican-American professional, Juan Diaz, who has been the WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO world Lightweight champion has declared that he is going to take a temporary break from the boxing world in order to attend The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Law School.
The promoter of Diaz, Leon Margules of Warriors Boxing made an effort to bring the possible opponent for him as his next competition. The 33-year-old, American professional Light Welterweight David Torres was chosen as his next opponent. Both the fighters
were brought together to sign the final fight contract two weeks ago.
However, just after 14 days without paying any attention to the contractual obligations, Diaz announced on Tuesday that he is withdrawing his interest from the fight and that he is dismissing himself from boxing because he has to be with the law students.
Baby Bull, Diaz has been outstanding since he joined professional boxing but now these days Diaz is under immense pressure at this stage of his career. It was a strange and declining stage of his career when the 5 ft 6” tall, Diaz faced the first ever loss
of his career after winning 33 of his consecutive fights. Afterwards, Diaz faced 3 losses with only two more wins in his professional boxing career.
The 27-year-old, Diaz fought 39 of his total fights of which he won 35 competitive bouts including 17 knockout wins with 4 losses and no draws.
It was scheduled that Diaz will be fighting against Torres in their 10-round Lightweight bout at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas on July 29. Diaz has spoken several times in the past that one day he will go to the University Of Massachusetts Dartmouth Law
School.
Diaz told the media two weeks ago when he announced his comeback fight, “I have the acceptance letter from law school and I look at it every day and question myself every day if I am making the right decision, I put it to the side and say law school can
wait. What I really want is to become champion again, so I've been emailing back and forth with the university to see if I can work something out where they will let me defer for a year because I don't think I want to go yet.”
In an effort to excuse Diaz’s action his manager Willie Savannah faxed a letter to Margules saying, “He had trained 4-5 days per week for months in anticipation of once again becoming a world champion, He made this decision last Friday and I support it 100
percent. I hope that Warriors and ESPN will understand.”
The manager apologised for the inconvenience caused by Diaz to other parties to the contract.
