Juan Ferrero sends lucky loser Mischa Zverev home from Barcelona Open
Spanish tennis player Juan Carlos Ferrero scored a straight-sets victory over Mischa Zverev of Germany earlier today, defeating his second round opponent in easy straights to proceed to the third round of the tournament. It was
a routine victory for the Spanish pro, who took a little under one hour and forty minutes to send Zverev packing with a 6-4, 7-5 defeat at the 2011 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell.
Zverev is currently ranked outside the ATP Top 100 at World Number 105, and only qualified for the tournament as a replacement for World Number 4 Andy Murray after the British player withdrew from the tournament due to an elbow
injury. Zverev thus joined the event as a Lucky Loser.
Juan Carlos Ferrero is definitely the more experienced player, having been on tour since 1998 and winning fifteen titles over the course of his year. The 31-year-old had been beaten by Zverev twice before, however, in their only
two meetings. Several spectators were unsure about his ability to defeat Zverev for the first time, but they need not have worried.
The Spanish tennis player played quite well in the first set of the match, scoring two aces and saving 100 per cent of his break points. He also won half his break points against Zverez, and scored 53 per cent of the points played
in the first set. He took the lead with a 6-4 score-line.
Mischa Zverev seemed to regain some of the confidence which led him to his two previous victories over the player, and he fought hard in the second set. The player managed to convert two break points, but was broken thrice himself.
He succeeded in pushing the match to a set tie-breaker, but won eight points less than Juan Carlos Ferrero to lose the set 5-7. The final score-line was 6-4, 7-5 to the Spanish tennis pro.
Juan Carlos Ferrero will now take on qualifier Simone Vagnozzi of France in the third round of the clay tournament, after the player ousted sixteenth seed Juan Monaco to reach the round of the last 16.
