Juan Ignacio Chela and Bruno Soares advance at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters Doubles
Argentinean Juan Ignacio Chela and Brazilian Bruno Soares upset 8th seeded pair of Swede Robert Lindstedt and Romanian Horia Tecau in straight sets on Wednesday to advance to quarters at Monte Carlo Country Club in Monaco.
The Argentinean Brazilian duo rallied past Slovak Michal Mertinak and Belgian d**k Norman in a three set thriller in the first round. They kept their winning momentum and overpowered the seeded pair in 67 minutes at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin
to reach the quarters.
In the opening set, they entered the match with full passion and held their opening serve comfortably. They then held their entire serves and had a much better first serve share of 74 percent as compared to their opponents’ 60
percent. Chela and Soares also earned an exceptional 86 percent win on it and with their perfect co-ordination, they converted two out of three breakpoint opportunities to their advantage to clinch the set with a convincing 6-2 win.
The Argentinean Brazilian tandem carried their winning ways into the second set and held their opening serve. They produced a similar first serve share of 67 percent and earned an acceptable 60 percent win on it. Though the unseeded
pair lost their serve once they capitalised on both of the breakpoint opportunities they found to eventually win the set with a 6-4 win.
Ranked 17th in the ATP World Tour Men’s Doubles rankings, Lindstedt and Tecau were in great shape this season and had a 9-4 win-loss record so far. They entered this tournament confidently and reached the second round
after receiving a bye from the first round for being a seeded pair. However, they lacked co-ordination, committed several unforced errors and saved only one out of five breakpoints to eventually exit from this ATP World Tour 1000 event in their opening match.
Chela and Soares will next face Ukrainian Russian pair of Sergiy Stakhovsky and Mikhail Youzhny who also reached this spot by upsetting a seeded pair. Stakhovsky and Youzhny destroyed 3rd seeded pair of Austrian Jurgen
Melzer and German Philipp Petzschner with a breadstick.
On another court, 4th seeds advanced to the quarters after rallying past French wild card enterers Julien Benneteau and Jeremy Chardy by 7-6(5), 4-6,12-10 thriller. The seeded pair of Polish Lukasz Kubot and Austrian
Oliver Marach converted just one out of seven breakpoint opportunities to their advantage and clobbered several unforced errors and seven double faults but their co-ordination helped them win the match.
