Juan Ignacio Chela devastates Cesar Ramirez in round one – Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012
Argentinean ace, Juan Ignacio Chela, crushed the local wild card entrant, Cesar Ramirez, with a bagel at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012 on Monday. Facing a pessimist crowd, the Argentinean registered a superb 6-0, 6-2 victory against Ramirez in the opening round at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 series event held in Acapulco, Mexico.
Bidding for his seventh ATP career title, Chela remained on the right path after blasting past the world number 536 at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess. Battling each other for the first time, he not only took lead in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series by 1-0 against the Mexican but also advanced into the second round of this clay court tournament.
The world number 33 high spiritedly entered the Mexican clay courts and drew the first blood in the opening game. He sought his rhythm and continued plucking in the following five games successively, ultimately pocketing a bagel in almost half an hour. Chela kept his entire serves without facing any real contest and converted three out of four break opportunities to his advantage.
After the local star showed some resistance and held his serve in the third game, Chela went on a five-game killing spree and clinched the set with a 6-2 score line. He was never threatened with any breakpoint and cashed in both break chances to dominate throughout the set.
Overall, the 32-year-old manipulated a slightly lower first serve share of 74 percent as opposed to Ramirez’s 77 percent and incredibly clicked 21 out of 28 points on it.
Chela will next confront the winner of the match between eighth seeded Fernando Verdasco and the Italian star, Filippo Volandri.
Earlier, the Italian tennis ace Potito Starace stole the spotlight after dumping his compatriot, Alessandro Giannessi, in straight sets. Starace failed to fend off both breakpoints he encountered but capitalised on five out of nine break opportunities to register a 6-2, 7-5 score line in their first encounter.
Up next for the winning Italian is the conqueror of the match between third seeded Gilles Simon and Chela’s fellow citizen, Carlos Berlocq.
