Juan Jose Cobo rides at the Memorial Pantani race after the Vuelta win – Cycling News
Juan Jose Cobo of team Geox-TMC was participating at the Memorial Pantani race in Italy as he finished the race in ninth position. Cobo was seen racing at the Vuelta a Espana 2011 as he finished the race with flying colours and won the final general classifications.
He finished the Vuelta a Espana in a total time of 84:59:31 ahead of Christopher Froome and Bradley Wiggins who finished at second and third positions respectively.
Team Geox-TMC was invited to the Spanish Grand Tour through a wild card entry and Cobo was given the chance to help his race leader Denis Menchov. He took over the leading responsibilities after the stage 15 win at the Vuelta a Espana as he managed to overcome
the attacks launched by the race favourites Christopher Froome and Bradley Wiggins. He also won the Combination classification along with a second place finish at stage 14 and 17.
Cobo has not raced since the Vuelta as he said, “After the Vuelta I put my bike away for a few days to recuperate.”
The 30-year-old mentioned that he became the centre of attention after winning the grand event and now people have more expectations from him. The Spaniard stated that he will live up to the expectations of his team and the fans. Cobo is looking to improve
his performance in the coming tours, as he is working hard on gaining his strength and competitive edge. His aggressive riding style has earned him the praise of other cyclists on the circuit.
There is a rumour that Cobo has received a very good offer to join team Astana in the coming season as his contract with Geox-TMC is finishing by the end of this year. Joxean Matxin is the directeur sportif of Geox-TMC who hopes to retain the cyclist for
the coming future. It will be interesting to see if Joxean can offer Cobo something more attractive than Astana because it is said that team Astana has made a huge offer to the cyclist.
