Juan Manuel Lopez faces one year licence cancellation – Boxing News
Juan Manuel Lopez, also known as Juanma, got his licence cancelled by the Puerto Rican Professional Boxing Commission for a year. The former two-division champion also received punishment of spending 100 hours for community service and a fine of $10,000
for making false accusations on referee Roberto Ramirez after his recent bout with Orlando Salido.
In an interview, Juan Manuel Lopez, after his last fight against Orlando Salido, called referee Roberto Ramirez and his son gamblers. According to Juan’s statement, Ramirez stopped the fight because he had gambled on it. Juanma said that he could have easily
carried on with the fight if the referee had not stopped it. He then said that his first encounter with Salido was stopped by Roberto’s son for the same reason. President of PR Best Boxing Promotions, Alberto Arroyo, after Ramirez filed a claim to the commission,
said that Juanma could possibly suffer a year ban from boxing, and that is exactly what happened.
As of now, Juanma has been banned for one year. The ban will be effective until May 10, 2013, after which Juan Manuel Lopez will be able to fight again.
After lashing out on Ramirez, Juanma emailed him an apology but the referee did not accept it. Roberto said that he wants Juanma to apologise to him on a larger platform similar to the one on which he accused him. On his demand, Juan Manuel Lopez called
a press conference some days back and said that his claims were baseless and that he apologises to Roberto. Although Roberto had said that after a public apology he would ‘forget what happened’, he did not do so. Instead, Roberto Ramirez chose to carry on
with the procedure that has now resulted in a ban on Juanma for a year.
Juanma was up against Orlando Salido for the WBO featherweight title. This was a rematch between both the pugilists for the first match that was held on April 4, 2011. The rematch was Juanma’s last chance to grab the title from Salido but he lost by a 10
round knockout. For now, unfortunately Juanma will not be able to fight for one year and then probably he will get a third fight with Salido.
