Juan Manuel Marquez against Cesar Cuenca set for April 21 – Boxing news
Juan Manuel Marquez will make his ring return on April 21 in a bout against Cesar Cuenca from Argentina. The fight is scheduled to take place in Mexico.
Marquez, who has 53 wins, 6 losses, one tie and 39 KOs in his portfolio, was stripped off the WBA lightweight super title in 2011 when he fought outside the division.
Marquez’s last two years have been pretty troublesome especially after the title was taken away. His last loss was against Manny Pacquiao through a split decision. Since then, Marquez has been off the screen and he even claimed that he would retire since
he was not satisfied with the scoring. Talks of Marquez fighting Lamont Peterson were in the air until Peterson decided to fight Amir Khan on May 19 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Later on, talks of Marquez again going head to head with Manny Pacquiao came on the scene, but again Marquez was dropped off and instead Manny chose to fight the unbeaten Timothy Bradley.
However, finally Marquez got his opportunity against Cuenca at 140. Cuenca is an unbeaten Argentinean southpaw who is currently rated as number 1 in WBO’s ratings of fighters in the welterweight division.
Moreover, this will be the first time Cuenca will fight outside his country, which means he will not have the home crowd advantage.
Juan Manuel Marquez’s biggest setback came at the hands of Manny Pacquiao. Both the fighters have been in the ring against each other thrice and Manny has beaten him twice while one of their bouts ended up in a tie. All the three fights ended up with controversial
decisions due to which Marquez has never accepted Manny as the better fighter. Since his spree of losses against Manny, Marquez decided not to fight ever again.
However, this year it seems like Marquez wants to enter the ring again and reclaim his lost glory. There are speculations that if Marquez defeats Cuenca, he might go for Manny Pacquiao once again. If Marquez vs. Manny happens again, it will be one of the
best fights of 2012 and for sure promotion agencies of both the sides will try their best to cash in on this opportunity.
