Juan Manuel Marquez fined by Mexican Government for wearing PRI logo – Boxing news
Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez is fined by Mexico’s election commission for putting on a political party’s logo during his match against Manny Pacquiao last year on November 12.
The fine levied upon Marquez is of 29,000 pesos ($2,260 dollars).
Welterweight boxer Juan Manuel Marquez wore Institutional Revolutionary Party’s logo during the match, which irked many officials along with the governing National Action Party.
According to the election commission, all members have unanimously voted to levy the fine on Marquez for his illegitimate act. Mexican law prohibits any party’s public campaigning within a week of the elections. Due to Marquez’s act, opposing parties protested
and the mayoral elections for Morelia were annulled. Protestors claimed that the logo Marquez wore was seen by more than 40 million people.
Juan Manuel Marquez went head to head with Manny Pacquiao on November 12. Marquez lost to Pacquiao via decision. This was their third fight and the second defeat for Marquez at the hands of Manny.
However, the result of the fight soon became controversial. The crowd booed Manny when the decisions were being announced.
Despite being defeated twice, Marquez announced on November 12 that he wants to clash with Pacquiao once again to prove his mettle. He further stated that the fourth match should be in his (Marquez) hometown. Due to the irregularities in their previous fights,
Marquez had put forth a couple of conditions.
As of now, Marquez has plans of returning to the light welterweight division to fight Timothy Bradley. News of the fine levied upon him by the Mexican election commission surfaced yesterday. No updates from Marquez or his camp have been received as of yet.
It is expected of Marquez to either file a petition against the decision or simply pay the fine to get stones rolling. Marquez, like Manny Pacquiao, is at the verge of retirement and he would not want to leave the boxing world with such sanctions upon him.
Marquez is currently rated among the best boxing stars today and is currently The Ring Lightweight Champion. He is rated as the sixth best pound-for-pound boxer in the world by Ring Magazine.
