Juan Manuel Marquez says everything up to Manny Pacquiao
Juan Manuel Marquez wants to show the world he can beat Manny Pacquiao.
Following Pacquiao’s tremendous recent performance against Antonio Margarito, the boxing world has been in a flurry to determine his next opponent.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum and Pacquiao advisor Michael Koncz have suggested “Sugar” Shane Mosley and Andre Berto.
Others have implied that “Pacman” ought to be pitted against the bigger Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez, who is coming off his own spectacular knockout of Paul “The Punisher” Williams.
Then there’s Marquez.
“I’ve proven myself in the last two fights with him [Pacquiao] and I’ve shown that I have the techniques and element to beat him,” Marquez said in an open media day workout in Los Angeles recently.
Marquez has other fish to fry for the time being, namely a fight with contender Michael Katsidis on November 27, but he insists he is prepared for larger things with Pacquiao.
"Everything is up to him [Pacquiao]. I know the people want to see a third fight. Maybe his company doesn't want to make the third fight but like I said everything is up to him. I'm ready. I'm ready to
fight him and he knows we could make a good fight."
Pacquiao told ABS-CBN Monday he would be “okay” with a third Marquez fight, but speculated that it may not come to fruition due to rival promoters controlling fights and because “perhaps nobody would care
to watch it.”
Pacquiao and Marquez have touched gloves on two previous occasions, with the first fight resulting in a draw and Pacquiao squeezing by with a decision in the second. Both bouts are considered classic
wars, and many, including Oscar De la Hoya, believe Marquez was cheated out of a couple of decisions.
Marquez will defend his WBO and WBA lightweight crowns against Katsidis in Las Vegas. He hopes to put on a dazzling performance in light of his younger brother Rafael’s recent loss to Juan Manuel Lopez.
