Juan Manuel Marquez says ‘no question’ Mayweather better than Pacquiao
Juan Manuel Marquez is willing to do just about anything to provoke Manny Pacquiao into a third fight with him.
The Mexican fighter, who fought Pacquiao to a draw in 2004, said in a recent FanHouse article that there is “no question” who the best fighter in the world is, and it isn’t Pacquiao.
“No question, [Floyd] Mayweather is the best fighter in the world,” Marquez announced. “He is just better skilled than Pacquiao.”
Marquez's comments to engage Pacquiao come mere weeks after Pacquiao’s performance against Antonio Margarito. Pacquiao met Margarito at the Cowboys stadium in Arlington, Texas, and punished him for twelve rounds in front of 40,000 people.
Since the fight, there’s been a proverbial scramble to determine “Pacman’s” next opponent—and Marquez is about as a close as you can get in the party.
For starters, he’s already clashed with “Pacman” on two occasions, both of which are considered contemporary classics by boxing fans. A second bout between the two had Pacquiao come out with a close win many felt was generously awarded.
Marquez has also met the formidable “Pretty Boy Floyd” in the ring, so he can’t be accused of lacking the requisite experience to make the statement about the two best fighters in the world.
“Mayweather has a very superior defence and the defence that Pacquiao has today is something that he generated throughout the years,” Marquez, 35, continued. “There really hasn’t been a real solid punch that Mayweather has received throughout his career,
that’s why I put all of my arrows to fight the best fighter in the world and that’s Mayweather.”
Though Marquez would like the opportunity to redeem himself against either Pacquiao or Mayweather, he’ll have to settle for beating Michael Katsidis first, his mandatory challenger. The two will be fighting Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas for Marquez’s
WBO and WBA lightweight titles.
