Juan Manuel Marquez trainer analyzes Manny Pacquiao opponents
Notable boxing trainer Nacho Beristain believes that there are only two fighters in the world that can beat Manny Pacquiao.
One of them is his own fighter, Juan Manuel Marquez, and the other is Floyd Mayweather Jr.
In an interview with examiner.com, Beristain revealed that if Pacquiao really wants to put his skills to the test, he should look no further than Marquez or Mayweather.
Marquez, a Mexican native and prized boxing veteran, doesn’t appear to have lost any steam over the years, despite maintaining a steady work rate against the world’s best fighters. In his last fight, he stopped a game Juan Diaz, managing to retain his WBO/WBA
lightweight titles and beat a fighter ten years his junior.
Beristain began with thoughts on his fighter and Pacquiao. “Juan Manuel and Pacquiao would be ideal because it’s what the fans want to see. People want to see that type of fight.”
A bout between Pacquiao and Marquez would be a third chapter of a feud that has already grown to legendary proportions. Marquez fought Pacquiao to a draw in 2004, and lost a close decision to him in 2008.
As for Mayweather, “Nacho” said, “I believe that a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao would be a very agile fight because Pacquiao needs someone like Mayweather or Juan to break him down.”
The prized trainer was not so kind when considering other alternatives for Pacquiao.
“Shane Mosley, I respect him much. He’s a great fighter but now that’s he’s at his older age, I don’t think he could move as fast as he did during his younger stages.”
“[And] As far as Andre Berto, he’s really not a fighter on Pacquiao’s level.”
Aside from Marquez, Mosley and Berto are currently pushing for fights with Pacquiao, and both have been considered by Top Rank promoter Bob Arum. Mosley brings high figures and a reputable name, while Berto, the WBC welterweight king, represents a younger,
more dynamic challenge to “Pacman.”
