Juan Martin Del Potro, David Nalbandian move to the third round – AEGON Championships
Juan Martin Del Potro defeats Igor Kunitsyn 6-4, 6-4
2009 US Open champion, Argentinean Juan Martin Del Potro, ranked 22nd in the world, cruised past world number 72 Igor Kunitsyn of Russia in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 in the second round of AEGON Championships at the Queen’s
Club in London on Wednesday. The match lasted for just one hour and seven minutes.
Del Potro broke the Russian in the seventh game of the first set, consolidating on it and clinching the set 6-4. The Argentine bombarded Kunitsyn with five aces and 67 percent of the first serves, converting an amazing 94 percent
of them into points in the opening set. The 22-year-old clinched one of the two break points he received on the Russian’s serve in the first set.
The right-handed put pressure on his opponent from the start of the second set, breaking Kunitsyn in the opening game and holding his serve in the next game to go ahead 2-0. Del-Potro did not allow the 29-year-old to break back
and served out the set in the tenth game, winning it 6-4. The Tandil resident delivered four aces and 79 percent of the first serves, winning 82 percent of the points on them in the second set. The six feet and six inches tall converted the only break point
he received in the second set.
The twelfth seed will meet either Adrian Mannarino or Gilles Simon in the third round.
David Nalbandian beats Ilija Bozoljac 6-4, 6-4
Joining Del Potro in the round of 16, compatriot David Nalbandian knocked out world number 200 Ilija Bozoljac of Serbia in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 in the second round. The world number 24 took an hour and twelve minutes to undo
his opponent.
Nalbandian made a slow start as he was broken in the second game of the opening set, trailing 0-3. However, the Argentinean gained momentum and won six of the next seven games, breaking Bozoljac in the fifth and seventh game to
clinch the set 6-4. The Serbian was finding difficulties in putting his second serve inside the court as he committed a horrible six double faults in the first set. The 25-year-old could not save one of the two break points he faced in the opening set.
Nalbandian needed a single break of serve to win the second set 6-4. The Argentine hit four aces and 73 percent of the first deliveries, sealing 75 percent of the points on them in the second set. The five feet and eleven inches
tall won 25 percent of the first return points in the second set.
The ninth seed will face Spanish Fernando Verdasco, seeded seventh at the event, in the round of 16. Verdasco defeated Nicolas Mahut of France in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 in the second round.
