Juan Martin Del Potro: Eye catcher of the season so far – Tennis Special
World number 11, Juan Martin Del Potro, has stunned everyone with his supreme form this year. He has been consistent throughout the year and caught an eye of everyone in the world. He is the one player who has improved massively
over the course of a season and showed to the world that he can achieve his childhood dream of breaking into the Top-3 players of the world having squandered it once, already.
He was the fourth-ranked athlete in ATP (Association of Tennis Professional) World Rankings in August 2010 but saw a major slump in his form that drowned him multiple places and almost kicked him out of the Top-20 players by the
end of 2011. However, he regained his form and climbed his way back to the Top-10 players before being knocked out of it by the new number one American, John Isner.
Del Potro is just 23 years of age and has a lot of time left in his career but this is his supreme moment to convert his dream into reality. He can easily break into the Top-10 players again and can sustain that position if he
continues to perform like this.
He started his year in Apia Sydney International and witnessed a major upset at the hands of the Cypriot tennis ace, Marcos Baghdatis, in the quarter-final round. He was the top seed player in the season opener and was expected
to win the contest but it seemed like his form will never revive again. However, a decent Grand Slam tournament, reaching the quarter-final stage and losing to the legendary tennis icon, Roger Federer, eased his nerves and gave him courage to step up and prove
to the world that he has got class.
In February, he reached the final of the ABN AMRO event, contested in Rotterdam, but again bowed down to the Swiss Maestro, Federer. It was major let off for someone who had a chance to have his revenge of the earlier loss but
he is still not equipped enough with tennis skills to oust the Top-4.
The first title for the Argentine number one came in Open 13 in Marseille when he stunned the local tennis icon, Michael Llodra, in the finals. Federer screwed his terrific run in the Dubai Duty Free Championships; reaching the
semi-final round of the tournament. Once again, the third ranked Swiss crafted a win in the quarter-final of the BNP Paribas Open against Del Potro.
However, the consistency helped him to grow a lot of confidence. He was defeated by the fifth seed Spaniard, David Ferrer, in the fourth round of the Sony Ericsson Open that ended his dream of winning a major title at hard court.
However, the second title for the Argentine came in the Estoril Open in Portugal where he entered as a defending champion and didn’t drop a single set throughout the tournament.
In his most recent match, Del Potro was ousted by the sixth seed Czech, Tomas Berdych, in the semi-final of the Mutua Madrid Open. He needs to get rid of that psychological pressure by defeating a superior ranked player now and
this is his prime opportunity to accomplish this goal.
