Juan Martin Del Potro confirms to defend his championship title at the Estoril Open 2012 – Tennis News
Newly ranked, world number ten, Juan Martin Del Potro confirmed his participation in the 23rd edition of the Estadio Open tournament, commencing from the 28th April to 6th May
2012. He is the defending champion for the tournament; beat Fernando Verdasco in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 in the final last year.
Talking about his comeback to defend the title in Estadio Nacional, the Argentine stated, “I'm delighted to have the chance of defending my title at the Estoril Open, a tournament of which I keep found memories, not only
for the victory itself but above all for the fact that it was in Portugal, where I fully recovered my confidence after the wrist injury.”
It is always a great feeling for any tournament director to have a defending champion back onboard fighting to retain his title. It always enhances the hype as well as viewership of the tournament. Joao Lagos, the tournament
director was delighted to have Del Potro back and stated, “It is always a true pleasure to welcome back a former Estoril Open champion, even more when he comes with the desire of retaining his title, as it is the case with Juan Martin Del Potro.”
He is the first Top-10 player to be announced for the tournament and apparently he is the top seed and the defending champion at the moment unless someone else, who is ranked higher than him, jumps in to participate in this
year’s Estoril Open.
Del Potro wants to prepare himself for the clay court tournaments, especially for the only Grand Slam tournament, Roland Garros French Open. For that reason, Estoril Open will play a major part, as it is played on clay court
and is contested closer to the dates of the French Open. He wants to perform better in Paris and Madrid as well so this tournament will definitely boost his morale and the best training centre before the Major tournament.
The Argentine tennis ace was injured for a long period of time before making a strong comeback in 2011. He was severely struggling from a chronic wrist injury but now he is back in action and means business. He performed
well in the Australian Open as well reaching the quarter-final stage before being dumped by the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, in straight sets.  He is just 23-years-old and looks to be a promising prospect; will flabbergast the audience with her stunning performances
in 2012.
