Juan Martin Del Potro conquers Blaz Kavcic in the second round – Australian Open 2012
Argentinean number one, Juan Martin Del Potro, eased past Slovenian challenger, Blaz Kavcic, in straight sets at the Australian Open 2012 on Wednesday. He formulated a 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 victory over the 24-year-old Slovene to advance into the third round at
the first major tennis tournament of the season taking place in Melbourne, Australia.
A former world number four, Del Potro, crushed the Slovene, ranked 103rd in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Rankings, in straight sets through amazing agility from his box of tricks. The competitors previously
met each other at the French Open last year where the Argentinean earned a straight set victory. He played in a similar way in this match and not only extended lead in the head-to-head series by 2-0 against the Kavcic but also book a spot in the round of 32.
23-year-old confidently entered on court number two at the Melbourne Park and drew the first blood in the second game to take the initial lead. Regardless of losing his edge in the fifth game, the Argentinean broke the Slovene’s serve again in the seventh
game and kept remaining serves, eventually sealing the set by winning six games to four.
Del Potro remained on track in the following set and earned the critical break in the third game. Despite levelling the scores in the sixth game, he kept remaining serves and cashed in another break chance in the eleventh game, clinching the set with a 7-5
score line.
Currently ranked 11th in the ATP rankings, Del Potro carried his winning ways in the third set and earned the coveted break in the third game, subsequently going 3-1 up. Regardless of losing his edge in the sixth game, he pulled out the victory
by striking out the last three games in a row.
Argentinean super star, Del Potro, will next face Taiwanese rising star, Yen-Hsun Lu, who trashed the French qualifier, Florent Serra, in straight sets to set-up this meeting. Lu brushed off all three breakpoints he encountered and converted five out of
twelve break opportunities to his advantage, bagging the match with a 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 score line.
