Juan Martin Del Potro dumps Lukasz Kubot in his season opener – Apia International Sydney 2012
Former world number four, Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina, had limited trouble in disposing of the unseeded Pole competitor, Lukasz Kubot, in the second round battle of the Apia International Sydney on Wednesday. The top seeded
Argentine blew away Kubot in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to claim his opening victory of the 2012 ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) season in an assertive fashion.
58th ranked Kubot hung in the contest for just one hour and 35 minutes before bowing out to the belligerent top seed in the second set of the match. He posed some resistance in the opening set but was completed flooded
by the flurry of cracking ground strokes from the world number 11, Del Potro.
The 23-year-old Argentine exhibited his phenomenal serve game throughout the competition, firing six thudding aces and securing 30 out of 43 first serve points en route to victory. He converted half of his six break opportunities,
with Kubot utterly frittering away his four break chances to remain at a disadvantage.
The unseeded Pole was off to a conventional start in the first set, holding on to his serve in the opening two games. The top seed nailed his first breakthrough in the fifth game of the match when he broke his opponent to lead
3-2 and then held his remaining three serves to close out the set at 6-4.
With 1-0 lead in the competition, Del Potro got even devastating in the following set and launched a series of attacking manoeuvres to drive the pole opponent out of the match. He stung two successive breaks of serve right up to
lead 4-0 in just 20 minutes. Kubot failed to recover from the early damage done by the top seed and had no option but to submit the second set at 2-6 to let the Argentine claim his season-opening victory.
Del Potro makes his way to the quarter-finals of the Apia International Sydney after disposing of Kubot in the second round clash. He will face the winner of the match between the Cypriot, Marcos Baghdatis and the local wildcard,
Matthew Ebden, in the round of eight.
