Juan Martin Del Potro fighting to be fit for the Davis Cup tie against Czech Republic – Tennis News
Former US Open champion, Juan Martin Del Potro, is battling hard to get fully fit for the Davis Cup semi-final tie against the strong Czech squad this weekend. The eighth ranked Argentine tennis ace is once again troubled by the
chronic wrist injury, which has been the source of pain for him since the start of his career. However, the 23-year-old athlete has a strong desire to recover quickly and represent his country in the coveted team event this week.
The highly-anticipated Davis Cup semi-final will be held at the Parque Roca, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 14th of September.
Del Potro is desperately willing to lead the Argentine squad into the gruelling battle against the Czechs and do not want to fritter away the opportunity to take his country to the final of the Davis Cup for the second consecutive
year. His physio has advised him to sideline from tennis for at least two weeks but the Argentine number one adamant to play the crunch game on Friday.
“The doctor has recommended me to rest for 15 days, but I’ll do the impossible to play against Czech Republic,” Del Potro tweeted.
Other members of Team Argentina include the world number 11, Juan Monaco, Carlos Berlocq and Eduardo Schwank. On the other hand, the Czech squad is led by the world number six, Tomas Berdych, along with the doubles specialist,
Radek Stepanek, Lukas Rosol and Ivo Minar in the side. Czech Republic leads 3-1 against Argentina in the Davis Cup ties and the visitors might extend their lead this weekend if Del Potro does not play the crucial singles rubbers.
The world number eight has been the real spearhead for the Argentinean Davis Cup team and played a vital role in taking his side to the final of the event last year. He also won his two singles rubbers against Croatia earlier this
season to book a berth in the semis. His injury is certainly a huge concern for the home side.
“Del Potro told me that the doctor Berger (a wrist specialist) told him to rest 15 days, but Juan Martin wants to be there,” said Martin Jaite, Argentina’s captain. “He will train the following two days and will decide what to
do. Leonardo Mayer is also training with us in case del Potro cannot play.”
It is expected that Del Potro will play the upcoming big match, no matter he is fully fit or not, as he is the only Argentinean who can hold the fury of Berdych.
