Juan Martin Del Potro leads Team Argentina in quarterfinal – Davis Cup 2011
Argentina competed in its first Davis Cup in 1921. Since then team Argentina has played 133 Ties. Currently Argentina is ranking 5 on the International Tennis Federation-Davis Cup with 15550 points. Previously they have been runners
up three times in 981, 2006 and 2008. They have never won the tournament however, never lost hope.
The fifth seeds had an easy victory over Romania (4-1) in the last tie during the first round. David Nalbandian and Juan Monaco had a clean sweep on day one in the singles rubber and then Juan Ignacio Chela and Eduardo Schwank
wrapped up the victory in the doubles rubber.
Meeting for the first time, the tie between Argentina and Kazakhstan is starting a day earlier than originally scheduled because of government elections taking place in Argentina on 10 July. Team Argentina has players ranking above
50 and their chances of defeating Kazakhstan are high. The Argentinean national team will be made up of Juan Ignacio Chela, Juan Martin Del Potro, Juan Monaco and Eduardo Schwank. July 7 will feature two singles matches, while doubles and two singles matches
are to be played on July 8 and 9 respectively.
Headlining the team, the highest ranked Del Potro was born on the 23rd of September 1988. He currently holds a singles ranking of 19. He reached a career-high ranking of World No. 4 in January 2010, however, soon after
attaining this ranking Del Potro had to withdraw from most of the tournaments in 2010 due to wrist injury, and his ranking plummeted. His performance against Romania was prodigious.
Following Del Potro is the 31 year old, Chela. Ranked 22nd in the world, Chela’s favourite surface is clay. He holds a record of 6 victories and 4 losses, the most important of his victories in April 2006, giving Argentina
the third point to beat then-defending champions Croatia in quarterfinals. He has a good chance at the quarterfinals against the Kazakhs.
Another top 50 player on the Argentinean side is Monaco. Born on the 29th of March 1984, he is currently ranked 43rd in the world. The right handed, won with superiority against Romania during the first round.
Let’s hope he keeps on playing that for the coming up event against Kazakhstan.
Wrapping up the line-up is Eduardo Schwank. The 25-year-old is currently ranked 189th in the world, once ranked as high as 48 in June 2010. His highest doubles ranking was 36 in 2010. In statements to M24Digital, Vázquez
said that Schwank always wanted to be in the team and that he is the best candidate to play Romania and so he proved to be by securing the doubles victory.
All bets are on Argentina to secure a victory against Kazakhstan especially with the home-crowd advantage. This time Team Argentina is looking to cinch a title.
