Juan Martin Del Potro makes winning start against Filippo Volandri – US Open 2011
Top ranked Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro made a winning start against Italian Filippo Volandri at the 2011 US Open on Wednesday, 31st August as the pair met for their opening round match at Flushing Meadows, New York.
Taking less than ninety minutes, Del Potro secured an easy 6-3, 6-1, 6-1 win over the lower ranked Italian.
Winning the toss, Volandri opened serve and held it successfully to put himself on the scoreboard. However, the Argentine was quick to follow in his heels. Matching stroke for stroke, Del Potro managed to keep the score tied for
the first six games. Clinching a lucky break in the seventh game, the Argentine propelled himself into the lead winning five games to three. A double fault on the Italian’s part proved costly as the Argentine once more grabbed onto the opportunity to break
his opponent and close out the set with a 6-3 win.
In exactly half an hour, the hard hitting Argentine hit eight aces, thirteen winners with only one double fault. Registering an impressive 93 percent win on his first serve in addition to the two breakpoints converted, Del Potro
was able to go one up in the set score.
Already dominant in the match, DelPo blasted away the Italian in the second set as he reeled off five straight games at 1-1 to clinch a breadstick victory. Although his first serve win dropped to 86 percent with seven aces and
fourteen winners, it was still enough to hold the Italian at bay. Enjoying a two set lead, Del Potro repeated the feat in two minutes less time in the third set as he clinched yet another breadstick win, sealing his straight sets victory.
The eighteen seeded Argentine, a titlist here in 2009, moves on ahead in his bid for a second Grand Slam win as he plays compatriot Diego Junquiera in the second round.
Junquiera moved on ahead after his first round opponent, Karol Beck retired from the match while trailing 2-6. An easy victory for the unseeded Argentine, though he will have to bring a lot more to the table if he wishes to best
his higher ranked compatriot.
