Juan Martin Del Potro outmuscles Jesse Levine in the second round – Wimbledon Championships 2013
Former US Open Champion, Juan Martin Del Potro, triumphed over the Canadian challenger, Jesse Levine, in straight sets at the Wimbledon Championships 2013 on Thursday. He notched up a 6-2, 7-6(7), 6-3 victory against the world number 115 to secure a spot in the third round at this prestigious grass court event taking place in London, United Kingdom.
The Argentinean top ranked star displayed exceptional skills to overpower Levine for the third straight time. As a result, he stayed on track to grab his second Grand Slam title and improved to a 3-0 lifetime in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series against the Canadian.
The in-form Argentine commented in a courtside interview after earning the glory, “Jesse is a good fighter, a lefty. On grass he can play with a different effect. In the second set I was lucky to survive and go through. At the end of the match I was confident on my forehand, I served really well and played, in the end, really good. I’m trying to go far, but all the matches are difficult. You can see all players can beat the top guys. Tennis is in a very high level at the moment. I’m going match by match and just focusing on my next round. It’s a big tournament, I like to play here.”
Seeded eighth in this event, Del Potro entered the Centre Court with conviction and held his opening serve. He warded off both breakpoints he came across and held his entire serves. The Argentinean capitalised on two out of five break chances and clinched the opener with a 6-2 score line in almost half hour.
Del Potro failed to defend the only breakpoint he came across but stayed focused and recovered. The set went to a tie-breaker where the Argentine edged past Levine and clicked the set with a 7-6(7) win.
Ranked eighth in the world, Del Potro drew the first blood in the second game and cruised to a 3-0 lead. He then held his composure and bagged remaining serves. As a result, the Argentine sealed the deal by winning six games to three.
Next in line for Del Potro is the winner of the match between Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov and the Slovenian contestant, Grega Zemlja.
The world number 11, Kei Nishikori, also stole the show later that day. He dumped Leonardo Mayer with a 7-6(5), 6-4, 6-2 score line in two hours and 22 minutes.
