Juan Martin Del Potro says his left knee is continuously troubling him – Tennis News
Former world number four, Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina, advanced to the round of 32 at the French Open but he shared about his bothering left knee once again.
The Argentinean bounced back from a deficit of one set to overcome the challenge of French contender, Edouard Roger-Vasselin, 6-7(5), 7-6(3), 6-4, 6-4 in the second round in Paris.
Del Potro said, “This is something that bothers me. This is true. It’s a constant bother. So what I try and do is not to think about it. I try and do my best with my tennis. And when I’m out there on the court I try not to think
too much about the fact that it really bothers me. So today and tomorrow I’ll continue with my treatment and the necessary practice, what I usually do. I want to be ready when I’m on the courts.”
Though, the good news for Del Potro’s fans is that his knee’s position has not gone worse from bad. He added, “No, it has not worsened. The trend is rather positive. But I try not to think about it at all.”
The Argentinean had got this injury during the Mutua Madrid Open at the start of this month. He lost to Berdych in straight sets 6-7(5), 6-7(6) in the semi-finals there.
The 23-year-old entered at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia despite the injury and cleared his opening two matches but went down at the hands of Frenchman, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, in straight sets 4-6, 1-6 in the round of 16.
Del Potro also needed four sets to win the first round here at the French Open, as he toppled Albert Montanes of Spain 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-1.
This is the Argentinean’s sixth appearance at the Roland Garros in his seven year career so far. He lost to Juan Carlos Ferrero and Rafael Nadal in the opening round in 2006 and 2007 respectively. Del Potro, finally, succeeded
in winning his first match at the French Open in 2008, when he ousted Josselin Ouanna in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 in the opening round.
The Tandil, Argentina resident gave his best performance in the following season, as he reached the semi-finals, losing to the eventual champion, Roger Federer, in five sets 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-2, 1-6, 4-6. Last year, he was downed
by the then world number two, Novak Djokovic of Serbia, in four sets 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6 in the round of 32.
