Juan Martin Del Potro secures his third title of the year in Vienna – Tennis News
Top seeded, Juan Martin Del Potro, marked an emphatic end to his current year, as he qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. He outmuscled the Slovenian native, Grega Zemlja, in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, and snatched his
third title of the season at the Erste Bank Open 2012 held at the indoor hard courts of Vienna, Austria.
Del Potro in a post match press conference told the media, “I’m so happy. It’s important to have a good end of the year. I’m looking forward to keep improving, keep playing well at the same level as I had here. I also look forward
to London. I’m looking better to qualify there. We have two big tournaments coming next week. They have the chance to get points also, so it will be very interesting.”
The Olympic bronze medallist has entered the number seven spot in the South African Airways ATP Rankings for the Race to London.
He exhibited a remarkable performance since the beginning of the tournament and has been absolutely ballistic throughout the event. He faced a tough encounter at the hands of the Luxembourgian professional, Gilles Muller in the
semi-finals but sustaining his focus and confidently contested for the final.
Ranked eighth in the ATP World Tour Rankings, Del Potro pocketed his third trophy of the season. He was also the Vienna finalist in the year 2011 and this year he won €87,870, along with 250 ranking points.
The world number 70, Zemlja, was hopeful to secure his world ATP title in this tournament. Nonetheless, he displayed a remarkable game plan throughout with determination and was able to battle against all the over powering odds.
He faced a stiff competition against the third seeded, Tommy Haas, in the quarter-finals and a remarkable victory against Janko Tipsarevic. He attained €46,280 and 150 ATP ranking points.
Talking to the media he said, “I’m happy with how I played all week. I just have to continue with that. I still have two Challengers to play at the end of the year. I have to get motivated to play.”
The right-hander Argentinean professional thundered his rival with 10 aces and had 62 percent first serve accuracy. He faced great pressure at the hands of his junior rival as the scores started to level down one after the other.
He assertively served with great force, avoiding all the unforced errors.
The Slovenian professional’s pace died down in the second game and Potro nudged forward to mark a 3-0 lead after the first three games. Later as the match progressed, he was unable to gain back the momentum, as he completely lost
his pace.
The 24-year-old Argentinean’s has surely given his fans a remarkable year and expecting to make wonders for times to come!
