Juan Martin Del Potro sunders Dmitry Tursunov in opening round match – Valencia Open 2011
Juan Martin Del Potro, Argentine world No.14, seeded sixth for Valencia Open 2011, played his opening round match against Russian counterpart, Dmitry Tursunov, ranked world No.39 at Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències, Valencia, Spain on Wednesday, 2nd
November. Battling out on hard indoor courts, the Argentine blazed the Russian in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, in an hour and 15 minutes to walk off to the second stage of the event.
The two well differentiated rivals took their sides on the blue court with the Russian competitor winning the toss and serving first for the match. Winning his opening serve, Tursunov rolled down his side of the scoreboard, 1-0, and switched the serve.
Following the Russian the gigantic Argentine, Del Potro, went on bagging his first serve of the match to even up the scores, 1-1. Striking early in the set, the 23-year-old Argentine broke first bagging game three of the Russian’s serve, 2-1.
Del Potro added another win to his table as he served out his second serve of the match, game 4, to lead 3-1. Russian then posed a greater defence, however, could not work on his offence to counter the Argentine’s lead. World No.14 maintained his two games
lead and eventually bagged the set winning, 6-4, and onto the second set.
Struggling in the first set, Tursunov went on to serve the second set starter, however could not make the most out of it. Breaking the lower ranked Russian early in the set, Del Potro went on to bag game one and followed on with serving out game two to lead
the set two games to zero.
 The 28-year-old Russian finally broke the silence as he bagged his first win, game three, to cut the lead to 1-2. However was unable to break back and cut the lead. Argentine world No.14 kept on bagging sets of his serve until he broke the Russian world
No.39 in game five to extend his lead 4-1.
With two more games left for the Argentine 23-year-old to finish of the set and win the match, Del Potro served out game six and broke the Russian on his serve in game seven winning the set, 6-1, and the match in straight sets effortlessly.
Through to the second stage of the ATP World Tour 500 event, Del Potro is seemingly a strong competitor and is hoping to clear the second round as well as he goes on to clash out against South African, Kevin Anderson.
