Juan Martin Del Potro thrashes Blaz Kavcic in the second round – French Open 2011
Former world number 4 Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina made short work of Slovenian Blaz Kavcic, ranked 82nd in the world, beating him in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in the second round of French Open at Roland Garros in Paris on Wednesday. It took Del Potro two hours and twelve minutes to knock out his opponent in a one-sided match.
The Argentinean broke Kavcic in the fourth game of the opening set, taking a 3-1 lead. However, he failed to consolidate on it as the Slovenian broke back in the very next game to reduce Del Potro’s lead to 3-2. The Pattern continued and the Argentinean broke again in the next game to go ahead 4-2. The 22-year-old availed the opportunity this time as he held his serve in the seventh game and served out the set in the ninth game, clinching it 6-3.
Del Potro relied on his natural style and continuously played aggressive game, hitting twelve winners in the first set. The Argentinean troubled his opponent with the quick returns on service as he converted 48 percent of the service returns into points in the opening set. The right-handed converted two of the three break points he received on Kavcic’s serve and saved one of the two break points on his own serve in the first set.
The Argentinean took an early lead in the second set as he broke the Slovenian in the opening game and held his serve in the next game to go ahead 2-0. Kavcic responded quickly, breaking his opponent in the fourth game to tie the score at 2-2. After that, it was all Del Potro show as the Argentinean captured four consecutive games, breaking Kavcic in the fifth and seventh game to bag the set 6-2.
The Tandil resident had a low first serve percentage compared to his reputation as he delivered just 60 percent of the first serves, grabbing 67 percent of the points on them in the second set. The Argentinean continued to return superbly and won 57 percebnt of the receiving points in the seconds set. The six feet and six inches tall capitalized on three break point opportunities he created on his opponent’s serve and saved one of the two break points on his own serve in the second set.
Kavcic came roaring in the third set and broke Del Potro in the second game, racing to a 3-0 lead. However, the Argentinean fought back and won five successive games as he broke Kavcic in the fifth and seventh game to take a 5-3 lead. Del Potro succeeded in serving out the set at 5-4.
The Argentinean is drawn to face hot favourite, world number 2 Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the round of 32.
