Juan Martin Del Potro will not play Davis Cup in 2013 – Tennis News
World number seven, Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina, has confirmed that he will not represent his country in next season’s Davis Cup competitions.
Argentinean Davis Cup team captain, Martin Jaite, had said some days back that he received a text message from Del Potro which said that he would not feature in the first round World Group tie against Germany.
Del Potro said that he was pulling out from the team competition because he has to follow his goals on the ATP World Tour, which are capturing Grand Slam titles and claiming the top ranking. However, one of the main reasons of
Del Potro’s decision is the selection of Jaite as the leader of the team.
The Argentinean number one was unhappy that his country’s tennis federation did not consult with the players before choosing Jaite as the captain of Davis Cup team. Del Potro and Jaite have been found having difference of opinion
on a number of occasions.
However, Jaite also stated that Del Potro would be welcomed if he decided to change his decision. He said, "The doors of the team are always open to him."
On the other hand, Del Potro said, "I found out from the media I was not playing - it is his decision. The decision was not easy - but I have important goals on the circuit. I want to win more grand slam tournaments and be world
No.1. I respect Martin Jaite and I wish him and the team all the best for the Davis Cup. I can't keep everyone happy."
Del Potro played major role in taking his team to the semi-finals of Davis Cup World Group this year. He won all three of his singles rubbers against Croatia and Czech Republic in 2012.
When Del Potro defeated the then world number one, Roger Federer, in the 2009 US Open final to capture his maiden Grand Slam title, he was considered to be next top player after the Swiss Maestro and Rafael Nadal. However, a string
of injuries did not allow him to play full tour in the following couple of years.
The Argentinean player regained some of his lost touch this year. He lost to Federer in the semi-finals of London Olympics, which was the longest three set tennis match in the history of the biggest sports event of the world. The
former world number four stunned the second seed, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, to capture Bronze Medal for his country.
