Juan Martin Del Potro withdraws from the next Davis Cup – Tennis News
Argentinean challenger, Juan Martin Del Potro, will not contest for the Davis Cup 2013 due to his personal commitments at the time of the tournament. When the event management team welcomed him to participate in the tournament,
he contently declined.
Captain Martin Jaite told the media in a press conference, “We sent emails to all the players likely to be selected and asked them to respond before December 10. Del Potro didn't answer. On December 20, he then sent me an SMS to
tell me that he was not available. The relationship with Del Potro isn't broken, the doors of the team are always open to him.”
The 24-year-old challenger is one of the top seeded challengers ready to face the might of the higher ranked professionals. In the recent past, the player has participated in several championships and skilfully ended the 2012 year
with his remarkable potential.
The right-hander made it to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open held at the Melbourne Park and faced a three-set defeat at the hands of the Swiss Maestro Roger Federer. At the ABN AMRO World Tennis Championships, he was unable
to rally beyond the Swiss number one and secured a straight sets loss.
The Argentinean professional manifested an improved performance in the clay court season. He was a seeded challenger at the Estoril Open and defeated the lower ranked Frenchman, Richard Gasquet. As compared to his competitors,
he made it until the quarter-finals of the French Open held at the clay courts of Paris. He was paired against the higher ranked Swiss contender, Federer and after a tough five-set match, he was laid to rest.
The world number seven, Del Potro, suffered from an unexpected loss at the Wimbledon Championship but at the London 2012 Olympics, he prevailed over the reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic and clinched the bronze medal.
That victory unquestionably added to the confidence of the Argentinean professional and he avenged his loss from Federer at the Swiss Indoors Basel. His absence from the next Davis Cup will surely be a great loss for his country,
as he is indisputably a unique tennis asset ready to undertake all disputes.
