Juan Mata claims there more to Chelsea than Fernando Torres
Chelsea winger Juan Mata revealed he had not been signed by the English Premier League giants to help misfiring striker Fernando Torres score goals. However, the 23-year-old http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 forward had asked him to
snub the other clubs and join Chelsea.
It was claimed that the 27-year-old striker had sent Mata text messages, urging him to move to Chelsea in the summer transfer window. The move finally went through when http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Valencia-c40863 and Chelsea reached an agreement and the Blues secured Mata’s signature on a
long term deal for a fee of £23 million.
In an interview before the match, in which Torres was somewhat misquoted, against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light last weekend, he claimed that he was certain his performance would improve with the arrival of Mata. Calling the other player’s slow; the
Spaniard striker was certain Mata would provide the necessary pace to help him return to his goal scoring ways.
However, Mata did not necessarily agree with his fellow countryman. While he agreed that Torres had help make up his mind to move to the London club, he denied he was solely there to help the former Reds man find the back of the net. Mata insisted his aim
was to help his team achieve their aim, which was to win games.
Mata said while speaking to reporters:
“There are a lot of big, talented players here. As well as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Torres-c13707, there are at least 20 more.
I'm just one more player willing to give as much as I can when the coach puts me out there on the field.”
Mata revealed that he had spoken to Torres during his transfer saga and that the striker had proved to be an important factor in his decision. Having previously been linked with London rivals http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429, Mata chose to move to Chelsea instead mostly because
of Torres’ convincing powers and the fact that Chelsea had done better than the Gunners last season.
He revealed:
“He said this would be an excellent experience for me to play as part of a bigger team and a team which has excellent facilities, an excellent manager and excellent qualities overall.”
Mata claimed the new http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 manager Andre Villas-Boas had also played a part in his move to Chelsea, which was something of a last minute transfer. In the Blues’ UEFA Champions League fixture against Bayer Leverkusen, it was Torres who set up Mata’s goal
instead of the other way around.
Torres also set up the first goal, with defender http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-Luiz-c10542 getting his name on the score sheet. The 2-0 victory was a well deserved one and even though the Spaniard striker did not score, he was crucial in the win. In addition to the assists, Torres put
in an overall brilliant performance and Mata was convinced that his fellow Spaniard had a big role to play for the Blues.
Mata continued:
“He did really well helping to set up two goals. He was excellent in the attack as well and I think he's contributing a great deal to Chelsea as their striker.”
