The 24-year-old moved to Chelsea in the summer transfer window of 2011 from La Liga side http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Valencia-c40863 when Andre Villas-Boas was the manager at the club. In just his first season at the club, Mata has gone on to win the FA Cup, the UEFA Champions League and the club’s Player of the Year award.
Unlike the other players at Chelsea, Mata had no problem adjusting under the young Portuguese manager and continued to do well under interim manager http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roberto-c31294 Di Matteo, who replaced Andre Villas-Boas as the coach at Chelsea in March.
The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Spain-c3011 international revealed he was looking forward to improving next season for the Blues, and doing better than he had in his first season. Mata said he was determined to further improve his statistics, having made 53 appearances in all competitions with 12 goals and 26 assists.
Mata said while speaking to reporters:
“My focus is to continue improving. I am young as a footballer and I have to improve my game and my statistics over the next year, this is what I will try to do. You cannot rest on what you have achieved; you must look to the future and hope for more success.”
With the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League already secured in his first season with Chelsea, Mata is currently eyeing success with country in the European Championships. He plans to focus on resuming his career with the Blues once the European tournament has concluded.
Mata revealed he was still in shock from the overwhelming success he had achieved in his very first season in the English Premier League, especially when it had been predicted he would take some time adjusting to the English game.
He continued:
“I could never have expected my first season to go this well. To win the FA Cup, the Champions League and the Chelsea Player of the Year, it is incredible and I am so happy, but I want more.”
