Juan Mata wants Valencia to extend his contract or let him go
The transfer market in Europe is drawing to a close and players and agents are trying to make quick decisions as to their future. Juan Mata the midfielder from Valencia is said to be unhappy with his club and his future is still undecided. His agent who is also his father has said that Valencia must make a decision quickly as to the status of his contract, as the transfer window is about to close. He said that if he is not to be offered a new contract than he should have the right to move on.
There were strong speculations in the Spanish media that Mata would be leaving Valencia, following the departures of David Villa (Barcelona), Carlos Marchena and David Silva (Manchester City). But latest developments could suggest that he may stay at the club.
Mata was linked strongly with a move to Barcelona during the world cup when David Villa’s deal was finalised. His father also confirmed that the Spanish champions had shown interest, but nothing substantial came out of it.
Mata’s agent said that he was in talks with Barcelona and they had asked him about the price of Mata. He said that he had talked to Valencia about the interest from Barcelona but they said that for now they are not interested in selling him off and things did not move forward. Since then, Mata’s father has been interested in renewing his contract at Valencia, but no advancements in this matter have been made yet.
Mata said that the situation was very unclear right now; he added that in a situation like this there are only 2 clear options. Either the club would extend the contract or just let the player go, he said that Valencia have not done any of those things and he wants a firm answer.
Valencia in a statement said that the player still has 3 more years left on his current contract with the club, but Mata has maintained that he has just 2 year left.
Mata said that last year he was offered a proposal by Valencia to extend his contract by one year but he did not take the option, so it is still 2 more years as far as he is concerned.
Mata’s father Mata Senior said that his son does not have any problems at Valencia, and loves the club. He said that the fans of the club love him and he also feels at home. Still there needs to be some assurance that he would have an extended contract, and the manner in which Mata is being treated in unfair.
When talking to a Spanish newspaper Mata said that he has enjoyed his time with Valencia, and it is not his nature to leave a club when it is tapped for cash. He said that he would love to stay and carry on but there needs to be an effort made from the club management as well.
Mata joined Valencia from Real Madrid; he made the move making use of a buyout clause in his contract at Madrid in 2007. Since moving to Vicente Calderon he has established himself as one of the most key players in the team. He made his name at Valencia when he scored twice against Spanish champions Barcelona in the Spanish cup and led his team to the final. He also was on the score sheet in the final against Getafe and has been a regular feature in the team ever since.
