Juan Monaco beats Janko Tipsarevic in straight sets – German Tennis Championships 2011
The 2nd round of the 2011 German Tennis Championships came to an end on Thursday 20th July with the last match played between the Argentine Juan Monaco and Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia. The match was played
on the centre clay court of the largest stadium for tennis, the Rothenbaum Tennis court. The 2 setter match ended in 1 hour 35 minutes.
The Serbian International, Janko, has been playing professional tennis since 2002 and is currently ranked in the top 30’s. The 27 year-old is having his career best ranking at world No.23 at the moment. Playing right handed, the
Belgrade born Serbian has a succession at hard courts and clay combined with strong forehands. His first encounter in the Hamburg Open was against Simone Bolelli in the 1st round that he cleared with 2 sets straight.
Playing against the Serbian for the second time on German ground, the mighty Argentine has always won a tough battle. Ranked at world No.42, Juan has been a pro tennis player since 2002. His career high ranking was in 2008 when
he was declared the top 14th players of the season. The Argentine has conquered the clay at many occasions. This fixture was never the less the same.
The Argentine opened up the final match of the 2nd round and the scorecard for the first set 1-0. Janko followed to level the lead 1-1 in the next game. The set went on steadily until the first upset in game 6 as a breakpoint
was won by Monaco to lead 4-2 in the first set. Captivating the command throughout the set, the Argentine wiped away the next two games to win the set 6-2.
Juan once again started up the first game of the second set and won. The struggle continued as both players won on their respective serves to tie the scores at 2-2, 3-3 and at 4-4. Monaco served for game 17 to take the lead once
again as the score card read 5-4. The chances were that the game would certainly lead to a tiebreaker but that was something no one could foresee. The Argentine broke the Serbian, what was the last game of the second set, and sneaked away with a breakpoint
and won the set 6-4 and the match 2-0.
Statically, it was a usual beating that Monaco delivers to his opponent. Securing 39 service points and 32 returners, the Argentine totalled 71 points against the Serbian’s 54. Monaco also succeeded in saving 100 percent of the
breakpoints while the Serb could not win even 1.
Following the succession in the 2nd round, Juan Monaco will now face Florian Mayer of for a spot in the quarterfinals.
