Juan Monaco crushes David Goffin to reach round two – London Olympics 2012
Ninth seeded Juan Monaco devastated the Belgian star, David Goffin, with a breadstick at the London Olympics 2012, a major sports event held after every four years. He recorded a 6-4, 6-1 victory against the 21-year-old to cruise into the second round at this grass court tournament taking place in London, United Kingdom.
Monaco, who cracked the Top 10 last week after clicking the Hamburg title, maintained his intensity at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and easily dumped the world number 61. After earning the glory, the Argentinean comfortably progressed into the round of 32.
“I think I played a good match,” said the Argentine in a post match press conference. “It’s not easy to play the first match, but I’m happy with the way I played today. Maybe, the first set, I was a little up and down, but then in the second set I played well.”
The Argentinean number two entered Games of the x*x Olympiad in high spirits. He drew the first blood in the second game and took a 2-0 lead. Apart from losing his edge in the very next game and exchanging another serve break, Monaco stayed calm and got the breakthrough in the last game. He prevailed in the opening set and subsequently sealed the opener by winning six games to four.
The 28-year-old perfected his ways in the following set and earned the critical break in the second game, subsequently jumping to a 3-0 lead before Goffin could hold on. He continued hitting powerful groundstrokes and wiped out the last three games to pocket the breadstick.
Overall, the Belgian youngster spilled many double faults and 15 unforced errors. He reflected:
“I’m a little bit disappointed to lose in the first round, but it was a good experience. There is a great atmosphere here at Wimbledon… and it has been a great experience in the [Olympic] Village with the Belgium team.”
Next in queue for Monaco is the Spanish contestant, Feliciano Lopez, who made an impressive comeback from a set down to triumph over Russia’s Dmitry Tursunov in three sets.
