Juan Monaco ousts Vasek Pospisil in second round – Rogers Cup 2012
Seventh seed, Juan Monaco, stomped over the local wildcard entrant, Vasek Pospisil, in straight sets at the Rogers Cup 2012 on Tuesday. He penned down a 7-5, 6-4 victory against the world number 104 to charge into the third round at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event held in Toronto, Canada.
Monaco, who cracked the Top 10 last month after making a final showdown in Stuttgart and triumphing title in Hamburg, carried his rhythm at the Rexall Centre. He required one hour and 50 minutes to not only overpower the Canadian but also inched closer towards his seventh career title.
The 28-year-old high-spiritedly entered the outdoor hard courts in Toronto. He drew the first blood in the opening game to jump to a 2-0 lead. Monaco then exchanged four serve breaks and kept his serve in the last game to clinch the opener with a 7-5 score line. He dusted away two out of six breakpoints he faced but cashed in half of the 10 break chances to inch towards the fame.
Ranked 10th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Monaco improved his game in the follow-up set. He kept his opening serve to level the scores at 1-1. The Argentinean number two got the breakthrough in the seventh game and subsequently clicked the set with a 6-4 win.
All in all, the Buenos Aires resident formulated a better first serve share of 57 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 49 per cent and amazingly availed 25 out of 40 points on it. He also hammered four aces and finished the match with 78 points.
Monaco will face off 11th seeded Mardy Fish who crushed the Australian lucky loser, Matthew Ebden, with a bagel to set up this battle.
The American number one, John Isner, will accompany Monaco in the round of 16. He lost his serve once but capitalised on two out of three break chances to manipulate a 7-6(5), 7-5 success. The eighth seed smacked 17 aces and clobbered a better first serve share to prevail.
He will next face the winner of the match between 12th seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber and Italy’s Fabio Fognini.
