Juan Monaco posts empathetic win against Simone Bolelli – German Tennis Championships 2011
Argentinean Juan Monaco, currently ranked at No. 42 on the world rankings posted a sound victory over his opponent, the qualifier Simone Bolelli from Italy, by scoring 6-3, 7-5 in their first round match on Tuesday. The clay courts
at Hamburg witnessed gruelling competition in the one hour and forty two minutes long match. The Argentinean is now safely secured in his position at the second tier of the bet-at-home Open German Tennis Championships 2011.
Simone Bolelli had earlier registered significant wins in the qualifying round and had overpowered Leonardo Tavares to enter the main draws. Clay specialist Juan Monaco recently performed well at the 2011 Swedish Open, where he
reached till the second round. The two players have previously met once at the 2008 ATP Masters Series in Hamburg, Germany and with this win their head to head rankings rise to 2-0 in Monaco’s favour.
Monaco opened the match by serving first and quickly rose to a dominating position by breaking Bolelli’s first game on his serve. The game swiftly progressed with Bolelli desperately trying to garner points but Monaco scored the
set resolutely at 6-3 with Bolelli left trailing behind. Monaco didn’t face a single break of serve scenario in the first set while the Italian had to cope with three breakpoints, two of which he managed to save. Monaco won 14 points off his 19 serves while
Simone managed to gather 12 from 19. Bolelli also managed to grab 2 aces but to no avail.
The second set was more closely fought and lasted for well over an hour. Bolelli displayed some of the skills that had brought him till this point in the tournament but Monaco persevered and won this closely contested set 7-5.
Both the players fought fiercely and registered a huge cache of breakpoints in total. Bolelli won two breakpoints and Monaco fought back with three. The game was pretty much tied and could go either way up till the 5-5 mark but Monaco powered through at the
end and registered a back breaking serve break to swerve past his opponent.
Juan Monaco will face Serbian Janko Tipsarevic, ninth seed at the tournament in his next round match to battle for a position in the third round.
