Juan Monaco pushes Juan Carlos Ferrero out in quarter-final – Valencia Open 2011
Juan Monaco, Italian world No.41, pulled off a winner against the Spanish former world No.1, Juan Carlos Ferrero, as the two clashed out in the quarter-final match of Valencia Open 2011 at Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències, Valencia,
Spain on Friday, 4th of November. Playing on hard indoor circuits, Monaco ousted the Spaniard 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 36 minutes and moved to the semis.
With the two counterparts walking down the blue court and warming up, Monaco got the hold of the opener as he served out and led the set, 1-0. Ferrero followed with an easy winner and evened up the scores at 1-1. Battling out
next, both won games on respective serves and levelled up at 2-2 and then three all.
Although the Spaniard had been in spectacular form, Monaco not even matched his stance rather beat it. The stronger Italian mesmerized the former world No.1 as he served out game seven and broke the lower ranked Spaniard in game
eight to lead the scoreboard, 5-3.
Unable to break back and make a comeback, Ferrero lost game nine, 6-3, and eventually lost the set. With one down the former world no.1 moved on to serve the next set.
Serving the opening game of the second set, Ferrero pulled off the first winner with a double game point win, 1-0. However, Monaco, storming in, evened up right away, 1-1 and switched back the serve. Pressurizing the Italian with
a triple game point winner, the veteran pulled off another game hoping to break next, however, could not do so.
Monaco levelled up at 2-2, serving out game four, and broke the lower ranked Spaniard in game five to lead the set, 3-2. Making use of his breakpoint win, the Italian swirled away with game six and was now left with just two more
wins to finish off the match, 4-2.
Ferrero, pulling back, bagged game seven to lessen the lead to 4-3. However, the untamed Italian stallion was in control of no one. Serving out game eight and breaking the former world No.1 in the final game, game nine, Monaco
eased away to a second win, 6-3, with the same score and finished off the fixture in straight sets.
Making it through the quarter-final round of the ATP World Tour 500 event, Monaco now moves on to play the semis stage. However, his luck might as well be against him as he now rivals ‘The Wall’, Spaniard top seed, David Ferrer.
As far as the analysts are concerned, they have no doubt that the world No.5 would make it look like a piece of cake, however, there is no doubt that the Italian is playing a better game this time. The two will kick off on Saturday,
5th November.
