Juan Pablo Brzezicki gets eliminated as Leonardo Mayer enters quarterfinals – Uruguay Open 2011 CH
Second seeded Argentinean Leonardo Mayer came back strong after losing the first set as he sailed into the quarterfinals after defeating compatriot Juan Pablo Brzezicki in the second round match of 2011 Uruguay Open.
Both players were eager to win the match to enter the quarterfinals but only one had to come out as successful. The match was an evenly balanced competition in the first set as Brzezicki had a 65% first serve winning ratio while
Mayer had a 67% winning rate.
They also won nearly similar points from their first serve as Mayer won 75% points while Brzezicki could win 71% points. In the second serve, the pace of both reduced as Brzezicki won 46% points from his second serve while Mayer
won 33% points.
Mayer, the world number 83rd player came close in winning the first set when took the fifth game to his name. But Brzezicki, world number 217th, restricted him from winning any more games. Brzezicki won the
first set 7-5.
With the second set in progress, Mayer was looking to equalize the match and he succeeded. Brzezicki had an 81% first serve winning rate as compared to Mayer’s 57% rate, but Mayer was in the lead from the start of the second set.
He delivered two aces and conceded double faults twice into the set.
24-year old Mayer won 82% points from his first serve and 62% points from his second. The 29-year old Brzezicki lost some pace in the second set as he could only win 68% points from his first serve and 60% points from his second
serve.
Mayer was using his service games to provide him the advantage to keep the lead in the second set. He was successful in saving both of his breakpoints while Brzezicki could only save one out of his two breakpoints.
Brzezicki, looking in good shape in the first set, seemed intimidated by Mayer’s counter attacks, as he could only win three games. Mayer went on to win the second set 6-3 and equalized the match.
As the match entered into the third set to determine the quarterfinalist for the tournament, Mayer kept his dominance over Brzezicki. He had a great run with his service games and won points with his return shots.
Brzezicki had a 79% first serve winning ratio as compared to Mayer’s 58%, but Mayer remained in a lead. He won 80% points from his first serve and 73% from his second. Brzezicki, on the other hand, could only win 45% points from
his first serve and 67% from his second.
Mayer remained focused throughout the second set and saved both of his breakpoints. Brzezicki could only save one out of his three breakpoints. Mayer won the third set 6-2 and qualified for the quarterfinals of the 2011 Uruguay
Open.
