Juan Pereyra wins Men’s 1500m freestyle gold medal: Day one – 2011 Jose Finkel Trophy
Juan Pereyra of FIAT/MINAS won the title of Men’s 1500m freestyle discipline on the initial day of the 2011 Jose Finkel Trophy on August 30, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
Pereyra emerged as the most powerful swimmer of the long distance freestyle swim and touched the wall in a fastest time of 15 minutes and 25.45 seconds for the gold medal. With his splendid effort, the 21-year-old Pereyra remained prominently away from his
following swimmers and secured the top of the podium for gold medal.
Pereyra’s astonishing timing placed him 11.23 seconds ahead of his closest competitor and his team-member, Lucas Cruz Kanieski, who acquired the podium for silver medal by submitting a time of 15 minutes and 36.68 seconds. The silver medallist was trailed
by Caio Romao Serebranik of Paineiras, who was 20.28 seconds slower than his preceding swimmer and reported in a third fastest time of 15 minutes and 56.96 seconds for bronze medal.
Pereyra was predictably strong for the gold spot of the event and remained undisputed in the thirty-lap swim. He stayed slightly behind Kanieski in the first 1000 metres of the race, while gained a comfortable lead over him in the 11th round.
The gold medallist then kept on extending his lead in the remaining laps of the swim and concluded his race in a marvellous manner, keeping his strongest competitor at bay for almost 11 seconds.
The podium finishers were chased by Daniel Acosta Catelan of FFC/RJ, who remained 1.35 seconds slower than the third position holder and posted a time of 15 minutes and 58.31 seconds for the fourth position. In the meantime, Samuel De Bona of GNU/RS transpired
as the fifth fastest swimmer of the event, as he stayed just 4.15 seconds behind Catelan and concluded his swim in a time of 16 minutes and 02.46 seconds.
Meanwhile, the arena witnessed sixth fastest finishing effort of Victor Hugo Ribeiro Colonese of Unisanta, who was only 2.40 seconds away from the fifth position holder and clocked a time of 16 minutes and 04.86 seconds. He was followed by De Bona’s team-member,
Fernando Ponte, who remained nearly 19 seconds slower than his former finisher and appeared as the seventh best finisher of the freestyle discipline, with a timing of 16 mintues and 23.79 seconds. Luan Vilha Sousa of Unisanta settled as the eighth position
holder of the event, as he posted a time of 16 minutes and 38.80 seconds.
