Juan Roman Riquelme offers to return wages to Boca Juniors
After suffering yet another injury which will sideline him for the entire season, Boca Juniors midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme has offered to return his wages to his club after playing in just one and a half games this season.
After signing a $5 million dollar contract with Boca Juniors back in August, Riquelme was unable to play for the club during its first twelve matches as he recovered from a knee injury. Upon his return, Riquelme played the entire match against Argentinos
Juniors, but was replaced due to injury at half-time during Boca's match against River Plate back on November 16.
In an interview with FoxSports, Riquelme said, "I will have to talk with the president so that my wages for this term can be used by the club.
I want them to use this money to help the youngsters or fix up the dressing rooms, which although are incredible should be improved."
Riquelme is suffering from Achilles tendinitis in his right foot, an injury which has been a problem in the past. Boca Juniors had been reluctant before signing Riquelme to invest four years in a player who had a history of many injuries. Riquelme's
contract is supposed to keep him with the club until he is 36.
"I do not feel happy having been on the sidelines for six months. The best I can do is not pick up any wages this season," he said.
Riquelme also stated recently that, although Diego Maradona kept him out of the side that competed in the World Cup, he would support Maradona's bid to take over the head coaching job at the Buenos Aires club after
Claudio Borghi resigned following Boca's 1-0 loss to River Plate.
"I'm a 32-year-old person and one puts these things aside," Riquelme told reporters. "The club president is the one who decides, and if he decides it's Maradona then he'll do his job as coach and I'll do mine as a player. We'd be in the same boat to see
that things go well."
